"This essay is about the literature of Science fiction. My primary goal is to place science fiction in the litterary field of today, as well as in the society of today. The essay is divided into three parts.
In the first part I define science fiction as a litterary genre. I do this by looking into science fiction in other cultural forms, by making an overview of the history of science fiction, and by discussing two different types of definition of science fiction, one modern (made by James Gunn), and one postmodern (by Damien Broderick). In this part I also look into the mega-text of science fiction, and explain how it works.
In the second part of the essay I analyse two books from different epoches of science fiction. These books are Foundation by Isaac Asimov, and Neuromancer by William Gibson. I compare these books both in terms of themes and language. One of the most important issues I discuss is that of free will in the books, another is the societies of the two books. I also show in practice how the mega-text of science fiction works, by giving examples from the books.
In the third part I conclude the essay. One of the statements in this conclusion is that science fiction is one of the most interesting genres for the science of literature, both because of the unique opportunity that science fiction gives to discuss and to play with ideas, and because of the special kind of language it has developed to do so. My other main conclusion is that science fiction has a very important role in the society of today, partly because of its romanticism (which makes it easy and relaxing reading for those who know how to read it), and partly because of its ability to discuss the problems of today without the strains that holds, for example, realistic literature back."
